Exeter Fine Crafts, the Seacoast’s most comprehensive selection of fine craft classes for students of all levels, is offering a new slate of courses for Winter and early Spring 2014. See below for the schedule of one-day and multi-week workshops and courses in pottery, jewelry and fiber art.

Basic Jewelry I

Tuesdays, April 14- June 2, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

Learn basic skills in this 20-hour evening beginner’s class – designing, sawing, filing, polishing, bezel and texturing metal techniques. Design and hand make a sterling silver pendant with a bezel set gemstone.


Tuition: $255, materials fee: pay instructor for sterling silver and gemstones you choose

Basic Jewelry II

Thursdays, April 2-May 21, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

If you have previous jewelry experience, and you want to reinforce your skills, this is the class for you! Soldering, sawing, filing – all the basics will be reviewed in detail, and practice time will be available. Bring in a project that you are working on, and a small quick project will be done in class.

One Day Jewelry Making Workshop

Saturday, April 4, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

This beginner’s workshop teaches you how to make jewelry out of copper and sterling silver sheet and wire. Cutting shapes, filing, and surface texturing will be explored. Demonstrations will be given along with studio time for you to create a pendant or pair of earrings. Copper for practice is included, then silver can be purchased from the instructor.

Ring Making Workshop

Saturday, April 25, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Learn to create beautiful rings of your own design. Students will explore several jewelry making techniques: soldering, forming, and hammering, to make their own textured rings. Copper and studio tools will be provided. Sterling silver will be available to purchase. (Stone setting will not be covered.)

Arts and Flowers Workshop

Saturday, May 2, 10:00 am – 5:00 PM

Before the summer flowers are all gone, run to your garden and pluck small flowers for drying. Place them in a book and put something heavy on top to press. Each flower will be roller printed on to silver, becoming the design format for a pendant. If time allows, we will bezel set a small gemstone with your petals. Previous jewelry experience helpful. Silver available to purchase.

NEW! Intro to Soldering

Saturday, May 30,10:00 am – 5:00 pm

This workshop is for those who would like to learn more about jewelry soldering. We will begin by reviewing the components of a jewelry soldering setup and torch safety. Students will learn the basics of working with a torch to solder joints and create more complex jewelry forms. Improve your basic skills while learning more about the wonderful world of soldering! Open to all skill levels.

Wheel Throwing Basics and Beyond

Tuesdays, April 7-May 26, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (8 weeks)

This course will introduce simple throwing techniques, with weekly demos and instruction given on the wheel. Students will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace and be guided toward creating a variety of simple forms. Continuing students can refine and expand their capabilities to work on lidded forms, matching sets, larger pieces, etc.

Learn to Throw in One Day Workshop

Jessica and Larry Lubowsky, Fire Pond Potters

Saturday, May 9, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Learn the basics of how to throw a pot on a potter’s wheel from start to finish. This hands-on, intensive workshop is ideal for students who have never worked in clay or haven’t touched clay for years. In just four hours, complete at least one piece to take home after it is fired in the kiln. (Ages 16 - adult)

Nuno Felting—Art to Wear Workshop

Saturday, May 23, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

This class is for any experience level. Students will learn about felting materials, techniques and a little folklore. Use merino wool roving, art yarns, wool curls and organza silk fabric to create a decorative, lightweight scarf or an art piece you can wear or hang proudly on your wall. Your finished work will be approximately 12” X 54”. Bring 4 big towels with you, they will not be harmed.

Intro to Glass Blowing Workshops

Saturday, May 2, two sessions offered: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Workshop at Peter’s East Kingston studio

Peter Ridabock, an accomplished glass artist for over 20 years, will introduce you to the world of glass blowing. You will learn to create a paperweight of your own design. Choose from various colors of glass, design elements and techniques to try something truly unique and exciting!

Registration and Policies

Students are considered registered when tuition is paid in full. If, after paying, a student is unable to attend, tuition will be refunded, less a $25 processing fee, only if student withdraws (by phone or in writing) at least 10 days prior to the first class. No refunds will be given after that time.

If the class is cancelled by EFC or the date is changed and the student is unable to attend, a full refund will be given. In case the class is cancelled or the date is changed, students will be notified one week prior to the advertised start of class.
Every effort will be made to contact students if class is cancelled due to severe weather. Students may also contact the shop. A make-up class will be scheduled.

Separate tuition checks are required for each class/workshop.

Studio information: studios are open for the use of registered students from 10am-4:30pm daily, 12-3:00pm on Sundays during the duration of the class, except when other classes are scheduled. Studios are not open between sessions.
