Exeter Fine Crafts, the Seacoast’s most comprehensive selection of fine craft classes for students of all levels, is offering a new slate of courses for Winter and early Spring 2014. See below for the schedule of one-day and multi-week workshops and courses in pottery, jewelry and fiber art.

Basic Jewelry Introduction

Tuesdays, January 27 – February 17, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (4 weeks)

Learn basic metalsmithing skills in this beginner’s class – designing, sawing, filing, polishing, and texturing techniques will be demonstrated. Students will design and make a sterling silver pendant or earrings.Sterling silver available to purchase.

Basic Jewelry Continued

Tuesdays, March 10– March 31, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (4 weeks)

Continue to work on, and refine basic metalsmithing skills in this beginner’s class with the addition of learning to make a bezel and set gemstones. Designing, sawing, filing, polishing, and texturing techniques will be reviewed. Students will design and make a sterling silver pendant or earrings with a bezel set gemstone. Sterling silver available to purchase.

Basic Jewelry II

Thursdays, February 5 – March 26, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

If you have no previous jewelry experience, or you want to reinforce your skills, this is the class for you! Soldering, sawing, filing – all the basics will be reviewed and practice time will be available. Students will learn to make bezels for pendants and/or bring in an existing project to work on.

One Day Jewelry Making Workshop

Saturday, February 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

This beginner’s workshop teaches you how to make jewelry out of copper and sterling silver sheet and wire. Cutting shapes, filing, and surface texturing will be explored. Demonstrations will be given along with studio time for you to create a pendant or pair of earrings Copper will be provided. Sterling silver available to purchase. (Ages 15 – adult)

Forged Hinged Bracelet Workshop

Saturday, February 21, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Students will work with silver wire to make a beautiful sterling silver bracelet with a riveted clasp. Learn how metal moves while also enhancing basic metalsmithing skills. Some jewelry experience is helpful.

Bangle Bracelet Workshop

Learn how to design, saw, solder and fabricate your own unique bangle or cuff bracelet. Students will be introduced to the materials and processes of jewelry making. Copper, solder and studio tools are included in the tuition. Sterling silver may be purchased from the instructor.

Wax Carving Workshop

Saturday, March 14, 10:00 am – 5:00 PM

Lost wax casting is an exciting process, from carving wax to pouring molten metal. Students will get a glimpse of this ancient technique, from designing to carving the wax. Students will create waxed carved rings, stacking rings and textured bands and experiment with various tools. Waxes will be collected on Sunday, cast and available for pick up at a future determined date. Polishing will be reviewed for finishing the piece Students pay for silver castings based on the weight of the piece. Prerequisite: Jewelry I

NEW! Spring Spin Ring Workshop

Saturday, March 21,10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Put a fresh spin on an ordinary ring. Create rings that are as fun to wear as they are beautiful. Students will make two separate ring bands, one wider than the other that will be fabricated together to allow the thinner band to move freely over the wider band. Several jewelry making techniques will be demonstrated: soldering, forming, and hammering to make your own spin ring. Copper and studio tools will be provided. Sterling silver available to purchase.

Wheel Throwing Basics and Beyond

Tuesdays, February 3 – March 24, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (8 weeks)

This course will introduce simple throwing techniques, with weekly demos and instruction given on the wheel. Students will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace and be guided toward creating a variety of simple forms. Continuing students can refine and expand their capabilities to work on lidded forms, matching sets, larger pieces, etc.

NEW! Pinchpot Critters and Sculpture

Saturday, February 21, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Bring your imagination and learn how to create small plant and animal sculptures. Elaine will teach techniques to beginners as well as the advanced potter. Starting with simple pinch pots, learn to make pears, apples, garlics, turtles, frogs, birds, or any small, whimsical sculpture you choose! This class is great for grandparents, parents, and kids to have fun with clay. Pieces will be glazed and fired after the class to be picked up at a later date. Ages 10 – Adult are welcome!

Learn to Throw in One Day Workshop

Saturday, February 14, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Learn the basics of how to throw a pot on a potter’s wheel from start to finish. This hands-on, intensive workshop is ideal for students who have never worked in clay or haven’t touched clay for years. In just four hours, complete at least one piece to take home after it is fired in the kiln.( Ages 16 - adult)

Hand paint your own garden markers and plaques for your spring gardens! Using the white bisque clay disks provided, decorate and personalize your own special markers and plaques with an assortment of colorful glazes .Four markers or one plaque included in fee. Batik Egg Decorating

Sunday, March 22, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Students will learn the traditional Ukrainian art of egg decorating using a wax- resist batik process. Using an electric tool to melt and apply the wax, several layers of color are built up. When the egg is heated, the wax removed, a unique and richly colored design is revealed. Gift box and stand provided.

Nuno Felting—Art to Wear Workshop

Saturday, February 28, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

This class is for any experience level. Students will learn about felting materials, techniques and a little folklore. Use merino wool roving, art yarns, wool curls and organza silk fabric to create a decorative, lightweight scarf or an art piece you can wear or hang proudly on your wall. Your finished work will be approximately 12” X 54”. Bring 4 big towels with you, they will not be harmed.

Intro to Glass Blowing Workshops

Two sessions offered each Saturday; February 7, February 21, or March 14 11:00 am – 1:00 pm or 2:00 Pm – 4:00 pm Workshop at Peter’s East Kingston studio

Peter Ridabock, an accomplished glass artist for over 20 years, will introduce you to the world of glass blowing. You will learn to create a paperweight of your own design. Choose from various colors of glass, design elements and techniques to try something truly unique and exciting!

Registration and Policies

Students are considered registered when tuition is paid in full. If, after paying, a student is unable to attend, tuition will be refunded, less a $25 processing fee, only if student withdraws (by phone or in writing) at least 10 days prior to the first class. No refunds will be given after that time.

If the class is cancelled by EFC or the date is changed and the student is unable to attend, a full refund will be given. In case the class is cancelled or the date is changed, students will be notified one week prior to the advertised start of class.
Every effort will be made to contact students if class is cancelled due to severe weather. Students may also contact the shop. A make-up class will be scheduled.

Separate tuition checks are required for each class/workshop.

Studio information: studios are open for the use of registered students from 10am-4:30pm daily, 12-3:00pm on Sundays during the duration of the class, except when other classes are scheduled. Studios are not open between sessions.
