Exeter Fine Crafts, the Seacoast’s most comprehensive selection of fine craft classes for students of all levels, is offering a new slate of courses for Winter and early Spring 2014. See below for the schedule of one-day and multi-week workshops and courses in pottery, jewelry and fiber art.

Beginning Jewelry

Tuesdays, September 30 – November 18, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

Learn basic skills in this 20-hour evening beginner’s class: designing, sawing, filing, polishing, bezel and texturing metal techniques.  Design and hand make a sterling silver pendant with a bezel set gemstone.


Tuition: $265, materials fee included: Sterling silver and gemstones available for purchase.

Basic Jewelry II

Thursdays, October 2 – November 20, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

For students who have basic and beyond basic skills (designing, sawing, filing, polishing) and need more practice with tools and soldering. Design and create a project of your choice: a ring, earrings, bracelet, or pendant. Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or instructor’s permission.

One Day Jewelry Making Workshop

Saturday, September 27, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

You will learn how to make jewelry out of sterling silver sheet and wire by cutting shapes, filing, hammering, and texturing.  Demonstrations will be given along with studio time for you to create a simple pendant or pair of earrings. Additional silver can be purchased in class.  This workshop makes a great transition into the “Beginning Jewelry” class. (Ages 15 – adult)

Arts and Flowers Workshop

Saturday, October 25, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Before the summer flowers are all gone, run to your garden and pluck small flowers for drying. Place them in a book and put something heavy on top to press. Each flower will be roller printed on to silver, becoming the design format for a pendant. If time allows, we will bezel set a small gemstone with your petals. Previous jewelry experience helpful. Silver available to purchase.

Wax Carving Workshop

Saturday, December 6, 10:00 am – 5:00 PM

Lost wax casting is an exciting process, from carving wax to pouring molten metal. Students will get a glimpse of this ancient technique, from designing to carving the wax. Students will create waxed carved rings, stacking rings and textured bands and experiment with various tools. Waxes will be collected on Sunday, cast and available for pick up at a future determined date. Polishing will be reviewed for finishing the piece Students pay for silver castings based on the weight of the piece. Prerequisite: Jewelry I

Ring Making Workshop

Learn to create beautiful rings of your own design. Students will explore several jewelry making techniques: soldering, forming, and hammering to make their own textured rings.  Copper and studio tools will be provided. Sterling silver will be available to purchase. (Stone setting will not be covered.)

Wheel Throwing Basics and Beyond

Tuesdays, October 7 – November 25, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (8 weeks)

This course will introduce simple throwing techniques, with weekly demos and instruction given on the wheel. Students will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace They will be guided toward creating a variety of simple forms, as well as exploring more challenging forms such as teapots, plates, lidded jars etc., refining and expanding their capabilities on the wheel.

Old and New Pottery Methods

Discover clay!  Explore a variety of pottery making techniques from hand building, using coils, slabs, and pinch pots, to working on a wheel. Students may choose to focus on the wheel, hand building, or both to create simple forms.

Learn to Throw in One Day Workshop

Jessica and Larry Lubowsky, Fire Pond Potters

Saturday, October 18, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm 

Learn the basics of how to throw a pot on a potter’s wheel from start to finish. This hands-on, intensive workshop is ideal for students who have never worked in clay or haven’t touched clay for years. In just four hours, complete at least one piece to take home after it is fired in the kiln.( Ages 16 - adult)

Hand Building: Making Slab Bowls

Saturday, November 15, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm 

For beginners and experienced clay enthusiasts, this class will introduce students to the art of creating bowls using the slab technique. This simple process produces beautiful results. Bowls can be decorated with colored slips, carving (sgraffito), stamps, and glazes. Slab bowls are a great introduction to pottery making. Everyone will be successful!

Needle Felting A Pumpkin

This class is for any interested felters, from beginner to experienced. Students will learn the art of sculpting in wool using wool roving and sharp barbed needles.  It is fun, simple, and easy to learn. Students will complete their own pumpkin. We will start from scratch to complete the form. There are endless possibilities once you have learned the technique!

Nuno Felting—Art to Wear Workshop

Saturday, October 11, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

This class is for any experience level. Students will learn about felting materials, techniques and a little folklore. Use merino wool roving, art yarns, wool curls and organza silk fabric to create a decorative, lightweight scarf or an art piece you can wear or hang proudly on your wall. Your finished work will be approximately 12” X 54”. Bring 4 big towels with you, they will not be harmed.

Glass Blowing Workshops

Peter Ridabock

Two sessions offered each day: Saturdays, September 27 or October 25, 11:00 am- 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm–4:00 pm. Workshop at Peter’s East Kingston studio

Peter Ridabock, an accomplished glass artist for over 20 years, will introduce you to the world of glass blowing. You will learn to create a paperweight of your own design. Choose from various colors of glass, design elements and techniques to try something truly unique and exciting!

Registration and Policies

Students are considered registered when tuition is paid in full. If, after paying, a student is unable to attend, tuition will be refunded, less a $25 processing fee, only if student withdraws (by phone or in writing) at least 10 days prior to the first class. No refunds will be given after that time.

If the class is cancelled by EFC or the date is changed and the student is unable to attend, a full refund will be given. In case the class is cancelled or the date is changed, students will be notified one week prior to the advertised start of class.
Every effort will be made to contact students if class is cancelled due to severe weather. Students may also contact the shop. A make-up class will be scheduled.

Separate tuition checks are required for each class/workshop.

Studio information: studios are open for the use of registered students from 10am-4:30pm daily, 12-3:00pm on Sundays during the duration of the class, except when other classes are scheduled. Studios are not open between sessions.
